Overview

"G'day, gather 'round, I've got a story to tell of a strange mysterious land where we talk quick and little odd, in place called Australia. There's claws and feet, pies and wings, things that squelch and things that squeak! with the occasional roving colossal goldfish, who likes a nibble on whoever's near. So, hang onto your socks as we welcome A.K.A the Squid a bloomin' cracker of a kid. On a family adventure, full of magic and discovery, where a couch is more of a pet, than just a place to reast-ya bum! A story of family and magic set-in country Australia depicting a young boy, named Augie Bartholomew KettleBlack, A.K.A the Squid. He has a great love for all Aussie flora and fauna and his family, but unbeknown to him is their Witchery powers till a great storm comes to their little farmlet and shakes their yellowed corrugated tin house to its very foundations. Where starts a fantastical journey with Squids older sister Lilly and his pet Guinea pig Tiny who speaks in ""Squeaks"" on their living breathing Chesterfield couch named Chester, part African elephant and part something that was before. On an adventure across the Tasman Sea, to find the island of the Singing trees, introducing Squid to the ways of Witchery and the quirky world of Aussie fairies. The Witches Couch was written with a young reader in mind, not to be overwhelming in its size (150 pages) to be a one day, fast & furious adventure that starts in the morning and is done by that afternoon that's spectacular in imagination and storyline that's just the right amount intensity & mystery to keep a child reading! Also, this tale is fantastic for a parent or caregiver to read aloud, which is as fun for them as it is for the listeners. Please enjoy experiencing an Aussie fairy tale with all our quirkiness & individuality. Thank you J.A. McDonald"

GoodReads L, H 2021 5 Stars. Utterly delightful children's adventure fantasy romp, full of fantastical creatures, lands, and quirky hijinks. It's nice to see witchy, silly, imaginative writing for children which is clearly full of such glee and passion. And the main character being just a little bit different, but not pointing a big ol' sick at his difference - it's just there - is progressive and refreshing. This is really great kids' writing and I hope many a child (and adult) gets to immerse themselves in its fun and creative world. GoodReads T, D 2020 5 stars Even though it was Squid, his sister Lilly and their squeaking guinea pig Tiny experiencing these magical adventures, it seemed as if I'd also been dragged into this whacky world of bizarre goings-on; a testament to the author's clever writing and off-the-wall imagination! The kookaburras, possums and Tassie Devils left us in no doubt of this tale's setting (as did the publishing imprint Waltzing Wombats) but for those who might struggle with the peppering of drongos, crikeys and the like, a handy glossary is also provided which was an amusing touch! Children will certainly enjoy reading about the deadly African broccoli, exploding apple pies, Trollems and fairies whereas adults may start wondering whether their own sofas also have the ability to transport them beyond the comfort of their living rooms. Don't even mention the elephant feet! GoodReads E, 2020 4 Stars. When you read this book you will go on a wild, crazy, magical journey with, ten-year-old Augie Bartholomew KettleBlack, his seventeen-year-old sister Lilly Ann KettleBlack and a guinea-pig called Tiny. They live in Australia and they travel to magical places on Chester a bewitched three-seater Chesterfield couch. It is clear that their Nanna-Nan has magical powers and it is hinted that Augie, also known as Squid will develop those powers in time. The story is full of Aussie expressions but there is a great glossary at the back of the book to help you. The story is wildly imaginative and the vocabulary delightful but may be difficult for a slow reader. Children would love to have this read to them. I could see this book as a great animated film. I loved the quirky humour. Amazon N, 2020 5 Stars As I read this fascinating story of Australian family and magic in Australia, I felt excited about a young boy named Augie Bartholomew KettleBlack. I fell in love with all of Australian nature with him, and it seems to be something magical. It's a fantastic trip with Lily's older sister and the boy's favorite guinea pig. I think each of the children reading this book is transferred to the path of Witchcraft and the bizarre world of Australian fairies. I will wait for the second series of this book. I also hope to see this paperback book to purchase for my nephew.
