OverviewThis unique work is not a reference tool, but a teaching-learning guide to studying the Gospel According to St. Luke. The focus is on showing how rather than on telling what. Tables followed by leading questions and statements help both faculty and students to see how the evangelist adopted and adapted his sacred texts (as well as Jewish and Greco-Roman resources) in light of his convictions about and experience of Jesus. Noticing the dominance of words, themes, and patterns leads one to discover the primary concerns of the author and his readers. Observing how the Third Evangelist internally arranged his materials provides a clue as to the kind of work it is and how it was meant to function. Table of ContentsReviewsIn this guide to reading Luke's Gospel, Gene Lemcio impressively displays the gifts a biblical scholar can bring to classrooms and small groups. Avoiding the role of The Bible Answer Man, he adopts a different posture: 'Did you notice this?' 'Here's some helpful background.' 'What do you see Luke the Evangelist doing in this scene?' This is a welcome invitation to read Luke's Gospel well. --Joel B. Green, Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Fuller Theological Seminary The genius of Lemcio's wonderful little book is in its 'Plots' charts and musings comparing and contrasting Luke with his sources and interlocutors (Matthew, Daniel, Asclepius), all the while showing us 'what makes Luke Luke.' His book will not answer all your questions about Luke, but it will give you better ones to ask. --Rebekah Eklund, Assistant Professor of Theology, Loyola University Maryland In this guide to reading Luke's Gospel, Gene Lemcio impressively displays the gifts a biblical scholar can bring to classrooms and small groups.
