OverviewThe Way it Happened Anyway begins in a high school classroom when Carmen, the narrator, first sees Micah Brooks. She feels an instant, quiet connection to him. However, before she can act, her wild, beautiful, and fiercely loyal best friend, Isla, spots Micah across the cafeteria and instantly calls ""Dibs"". Believing Isla needs happiness more than she does, Carmen steps aside, honoring the unspoken rule they've always had, and watches as Isla and Micah fall quickly and deeply in love. Carmen becomes an integral part of their new life: she is the maid of honor at their quick courthouse wedding after Isla finishes basic training, she helps Micah furnish their first apartment, and she drives Isla to the hospital to deliver their daughter, Ava Rose Brooks. The three of them fall into a comfortable rhythm until Isla, now a First Lieutenant, is deployed overseas. The fragile balance is shattered when Micah receives ""THE knock""-the news that Isla has been killed in the line of duty. Shredded by grief, Micah collapses, unable to function or care for three-year-old Ava. Carmen instinctively steps in, managing the paperwork, the house, and the broken pieces of Micah and Ava. Recognizing his inability to manage alone, Micah asks Carmen to move in, not as a romantic partner, but as ""the glue"". Living in the home Isla built, Carmen wrestles daily with the guilt of filling the space her best friend left behind, feeling like a ""ghost in the mirror"". The co-parenting arrangement slowly, inevitably shifts as Ava starts calling her ""Mama Carmen"" and a deepening, unspoken bond forms between her and Micah. Carmen's internal struggle culminates when she finds a final letter Isla had written to her, containing a final blessing and permission to choose happiness: ""Love isn't a replacement. It's a continuation"". Freed by Isla's words, Carmen and Micah confront their evolving feelings, ultimately choosing to build a new life together. The novel concludes with their small, heartfelt wedding, where Micah vows, ""I loved you before I knew I was allowed to... I love you now-not because we lost her, but because you stayed"". They close the circle by presenting Ava with her own final letter from her mother, solidifying that their new family is not a replacement, but a beautiful continuation of the love they all shared.
