OverviewThis volume provides an introduction to the wavelet transform and its applications for scientists and engineers. Readers with basic university-level mathematics are taken from a zero baseline to a working knowledge of the various transforms currently available and the scientific areas in which they are used. Chapter One is a brief overview of the wavelet transform, including a short history. The rest of the book is split into two parts: the first (Chapters Two and Three) deals with the mathematics of both the discrete and continuous wavelet transforms; and the second (Chapters Four to Eight) deals with applications in a variety of subject areas, including geophysics, medicine, fluid turbulence, engineering testing, speech and sound analysis, image analysis and data compression. Illustrations are used throughout the book to explain the concepts involved and applications discussed.
