Within four years (1862 - 66) a dozen acts Were passed and, as the system was perfected, it was extended until' internal taxes were again dubbed infernal. Some one remarked to Senator Collamer that everything was taxed except coffins. He rejoined Don't say that to Sherman or he will have them on the tax list before night! The number of objects taxed was gradually reduced until spirits and tobacco paid substantially all the internal revenue.
