The Wakefield Companion to South Australian History is a one-volume guide to events, institutions, people, places, themes and topics of significance in the history of South Australia. It provides an authoritative and comprehensive source of historical background information, presented in readily accessible language and format. While paying attention to distinctive, innovatory and unusual elements in South Australian history, the Companion also underlines the contribution made by South Australians to the broader national culture, polity and society. The first edition of The Wakefield Companion to South Australian History, released in 2001, was a landmark publication, the first such work of reference for any Australian state or territory. This new edition features more than 90 newly commissioned biographical memoirs and nearly 300 updated entries, besides some 40 additional thematic articles. This is a lively, wide-ranging work, presenting the latest findings and perspectives of 356 expert contributors.

Born and schooled in Melbourne, after post-graduate study in Oxford, Wilfrid Prest AM moved to Adelaide, where he has lived and worked for more than fifty years and is now Emeritus Professor of History and of Law. Besides contributing to the Australian Dictionary of Biography, The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, The Oxford Companion to Australian History and the Journal of Australian Studies, he has edited a history of History at the University of Adelaide. Kerrie Round received a BA (Hons) and PhD in history from the University of Adelaide. She has lectured in Australian history and heritage at the University of Adelaide and Vanderbilt University, USA, and has worked as a researcher in the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. She has written or edited five books and many articles concerning the history of South Australia. Dr Sandra Kearney completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies in History at Flinders University in 2022. She was the managing editor of the revised edition of The Wakefield Company to South Australian History, and from 2018 to 2020 was secretary of the History Council of South Australia. Bernard O'Neil, a consulting historian, is a member of the Professional Historians Association (South Australia) and a Visiting Research Fellow in History at the University of Adelaide. He was a foundation committee member of the Australasian Mining History Association, the Friends of South Australia's Archives and the History Council of South Australia. In 1990 he was a founding member of the Society of Editors, SA (now a branch of IPEd, the Institute of Professional Editors).
