The vulnerability and resilience of megacities

Overview

More and more people are moving to cities. The growing urban population, which is driving the emergence of megacities, in turn makes these cities extremely vulnerable to natural disasters. In addition to being hubs of human capital, urban agglomerations are also centres of economic and political activity and therefore present a large target area for the impacts of various natural events, the frequency of which is continuing to rise as a result of climate change. Given the high relevance of natural hazards to megacities, this study examined selected major cities in terms of their vulnerability and resilience.
