The Voyage of the Albatross

Overview

A smallish boy squats beneath a troubled sky on the shore of an unsettled sea and traces the spiral of a shell - spinning himself off on an impromptu odyssey in search of the Fearful Gyre of the World, that mysterious beast which lurks behind, beneath or within everything. Along the way the boy must resist the siren call of the Chilly Deep, face down the Bully Wind, break free of the aimless Fleeting Clouds, and so on to the Very Stars. Each new character reveals to the boy another facet of his own restless psyche. The boy's climactic encounter with the Fearful Gyre marks a moment of self-discovery - and self-letting-go. Explores themes of connection, loss, the self, chaos and meaning.

Reviews

""...a simple childhood tale with a message of cosmic birth and rebirth that will echo well into adulthood, much like Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince (1943). Poetic in its execution and profound in its message, Dumiere's odyssey begs to be read over and over again to uncover the layers of hidden meaning that lie just below the surface."" Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review) ""Truly beautiful. I mean just gorgeous. It reminds me of Le Petit Prince...It's art. It's heartbreaking, and everyone who was or is a child will relate."" Juliet Bond, LCSW, Director of development, Piven Theatre Workshop ""...in a word, magical."" John Sparks, Librettist, Founder of New Musicals Inc.
