'Rosaly Lopes provides the practical details needed for adventurous tourists to safely explore some of the most famous volcanoes in North America and Europe. She enthusiastically guides the reader to her favorite volcanoes, describing not only trails and past eruptions, but also photography tips and her own experiences. With its evocative color photos and clear maps, The Volcano Adventure Guide made me want to lace up my hiking shoes and follow in her footsteps.' Charles Wood, founder of VolcanoWorld 'Dr Lopes brings the reader into an intimate encounter with one of the most powerful and destructive forces on our planet, the active volcano. Her easy writing style takes us from the molten core of the Earth to the spewing lava flows and deadly eruptions of the past and present. Each page is full of personal knowledge and observations, along with excellent tips on how to survive being around one of these lethal beasts. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the awesome forces of nature and off-the-beaten-trail adventures.' Ralph White, Royal Geographical Society 'This beautifully illustrated book is a good rough guide to nature's rough stuff. Read the eight rules for visiting volcanoes and the five rules for surviving eruptions ('watch out for steam and methane explosions'), then choose your volcano ... Her book visits at least 25 volcanoes ... and supplies practical advice and eye-popping stories about every one.' Ultra Travel 'Lopes has many exciting and instructive personal stories that bring home the risks of visiting volcanoes. Besides being densely informative, most of the book is remarkably well written. It deserves to be a huge success, with regular editions, which, one hopes, may include a few Asian volcanoes. I shall certainly take it with me next time I visit Etna.' The Times Higher Education Supplement '... the work is essentially aimed at the discerning, prudent traveller, the amateur geologist, or entry-level student and for such, very good advice is given; really a sort of Travel Guide to Volcanoes. At GBP30.00 it is extremely good value and a 'must have' for anyone who is fascinated by volcanoes.
