A LIFE INSTEAD OF LIFE The voice that wouldn't be silenced There are moments when a person looks back and realizes their life wasn't a journey, but a testimony. I never planned for my voice to become my destiny. I never planned for war, siege, exile, indictments, illness. I only planned to speak the truth as I saw it sometimes clumsily, sometimes too loudly, but always honestly. My voice led me to the basements of Sarajevo, to airwaves without electricity, to courtrooms without justice, to hospital corridors without promise. My voice cost me security, career, health. But it never cost me cheek. When I reflect on everything today, I realize I wasn't a hero. I was just a witness who refused to look away. A journalist who never learned to stay silent when told it would be easier. A man who believed a microphone could be mightier than a gun and still believes it to this day. Sarajevo taught me that a person is measured by what remains when everything is taken from them. They took my property, my positions, my peace, my health. All I had left was my voice. And a few people who remember who I was when times were hardest. If I ever made mistakes let the facts judge me. If I saved anyone let it remain without applause. If I spoke I spoke because I had to. Today I live slower. I breathe more carefully. Illness taught me that every day carries the weight of a lifetime. I no longer chase recognition. I don't seek rehabilitation. I expect no apologies. Just one thing I want recorded: I didn't shoot. I didn't give orders. I didn't hate. I wasn't silent. This book is not an indictment. Nor is it a defense. It is a trace. If you read it and feel uneasy that's good. If you feel sorrow that's Sarajevo. If you feel hope that's life refusing to surrender, despite everything. My voice may no longer be on the radio. But as long as someone reads this story it hasn't gone silent.
