OverviewThe View from My Old Saddle is author C.L. Lee Andersons second equine book. The first book, Developing the Art of Equine Communication, was outstanding; this second one is extraordinary. After eight decades of studying, riding, training horses and participating in various disciplines, Lee shares his experience and knowledge with grace and skill. The author covers an astounding array of topics. Part 1 deals with the horse itself: the domestication of this incredible animal and its impact on the advancement of civilization; horse maintenance and health; and training the horse. His training suggestions are clearly explained and can be easily executed by even beginning riders should they choose to do so. In Part 2 Lee shares his incredible knowledge about horse equipment which can help any rider work their way through the confusing maze of bits, horse supplements, and saddles. Of particular interest are the chapters on bits which a person would do well to read several times. Part 3 of the book covers the various disciplines the horse is ridden in and/or trained for. Lee covers the extensive training and use the military has had with the horse, even into current wars. He also discusses English and Western riding and harness horses. For riders new to the equine world, Part 4 will be an eye-opener. Even knowledgeable riders may be shocked by the author's revelations. Lee shares his opinion of The Show Ring, a discipline he used to participate in but quit doing due to disgust. The discussion of Racing, race track practices and the treatment and subsequent injuries of race horses will surprise and shock most readers. The segment on the Rodeo, while not the least negative, is an accurate appraisal of the showmanship of the event, and the chapter on Trail Riding will likely be very appealing to readers. Overall, A View from My Saddle is a valuable resource for riders of any discipline, from the weekend rider to the seriously dedicated person endeavoring to perfect their horsemanship and riding abilities. In my opinion he sometimes underplays it too much! Let me be perfectly honest: I grew up around horse trainers and I have never met anyone who is more knowledgeable about equine behavior than Lee. And he does it with such grace and gentle skill. He is what used to be called a master horseman, and whatever he says you can take it to the bank. Bob Boze Bell, Executive Editor, True West Magazine Having access to Lee's vast knowledge of all things equine is an amazing privilege. Juni Fisher Songwriter, Entertainer, Author For over a decade I've watched Lee speak before crowds of young and old. He never ceases to amaze me with his love for and knowledge of horses and all things historically Western. The man is indeed the real deal . If he wrote it, it be a solid read, darn factual and darn GOOD. Alan Rockman, Educator and Historian Having considerable experience with Hollywood horses and western movies I can truthfully say Lee is the quintessential cowboy, with a twist. He not only embodies all the timeless horsemanship knowledge and skills of the American Cowboy and the Mexican Vaquero of yesteryear, but develops new ideas and techniques that improve the evolving equine world of today.
