Overview

Behind the writing of every book lies the author's inherent desire to explore and present the core subject matter. And if the book is related to history, then that desire becomes all the more significant. According to the chronological flow of history, ordinary people like us have been witnesses to countless events spanning society, politics, religion, and more - from ancient times to the present day. A closer look at ancient history allows us to understand how the hands of time have changed over centuries. Whether it was the hunting of animals with stone tools in the primitive age, the invention of fire, or the establishment of the grand Indus Valley Civilization, these stories never fail to captivate us. In fact, the more we hear about these ancient times, the more drawn we feel toward them. As time progressed, humans evolved, transitioning from clan-based societies to the formation of small states, and eventually, great empires. One such pivotal chapter in Indian history is the rise of the Maurya Empire, built by Chanakya's beloved disciple Chandragupta Maurya. This empire continues to reflect the richness and depth of Indian history before the world even today. To study any specific historical topic, one must first ask: Why should we study it? Why should we read about the Mauryan Empire? How important is its history to us? In my opinion, if there is any major reason to be curious about the Mauryan Empire, it should stem from seeing the Ashoka Pillar or the Ashoka Chakra on the Indian national flag. The Mauryan Empire was the first great empire of India, and even today, historians engage in discussions upon observing the vast extent of its map. The story of the Mauryan Empire teaches us how the humiliation of a teacher can inspire the creation of an entire empire. It teaches us how Emperor Ashoka, devastated by the bloodshed of the Kalinga War, embraced Buddhism and dedicated himself to spreading his message of Dhamma across the world. The art and architecture of the Mauryan period still attract admiration, and the Ashokan pillar and rock edicts clearly display the teachings of his Dhamma even today. As of now, I have not yet had the opportunity to visit these historic places in India. That's because I'm currently in my first year of studying history at Presidency University. But I sincerely hope that once I complete my college education, I will set out to travel across India and explore these historical sites - to truly experience why they are so celebrated and why historians continue to be drawn toward them with such passion.
