V. He proceeds to remove the doubt, What proof is there of [the existence of] merit and of its being the means of attaining to knowledge of the truth &c. If you say, the Veda, we reply not so, for the authority of that is doubted, and accordingly an apho rism of Aksha-charana says, That [veda] is unauthoritative being vitiated by falsity, self-contradictoriness, and repetition.
