Overview

If I told you we lived our lives within gates like zoo animals, would you believe me? Ever since the Great Break occurred, humanity had lost contact with all other islands. The gate we built kept creepy animals out of our space and keeping us safe from the forests. I really didn't know why I had ever felt the urge to leave the safety of humanity's nest. I was the second person to step on that ground, maybe even the first to step on that patch of withered grass. We threaded our way carefully through the woods, knife held in hand, breath held. There was no path, and a morning fog had settled over the forest, casting a blue light over it. Horror and terror crawled up my spine, but I forced myself to keep walking and take the lead. Trees towered over us like giants, their crowns like enormous umbrellas to keep out the rain, but also the sun. Soon the human world had vanished behind us, closing into the fog, and with it everything that had ever been familiar.
