Superb! This book will change many lives and, no doubt, save others. Janet Kelly has compiled a clear, concise, vitally important compendium of useful information and direction for parents and caregivers of intellectually or developmentally disabled individuals. It's all here, from the most useful websites, books, and government and private agencies to road-tested suggestions on how to deal with the large and small decisions inherent in parenting challenged individuals. But what makes the book unique and irreplaceable, is that Kelly frequently conveys her knowledge and suggestions through true, unvarnished stories of what she and her beloved daughter, Kathryn, went through together and separately. Theirs is a deeply moving story, told with compassion, honesty, occasional humor, and that rarest of commodities: actual wisdom. Not the least of the surprises come as Janet Kelly realizes that, beyond the very real challenges, her relationship with Kathryn has brought immense joy and an expanded understanding of what it means to be a human being. The Unplanned Journey will be a game changer in the lives of the developmentally challenged and those who love and care for them, a treasure house of both practical working knowledge and lessons on navigating life on its most meaningful level. --Jim Weiss, recording artist and author of A Treasury of Wisdom: Stories of Hope and Inspiration

Author Information

Janet Kelly has been a freelance writer for more than 20 years, and The Unplanned Journey is her first book. When her daughter Kathryn was born with profound brain damage in 1991, she feared she would need to abandon any hope for her own personal goals or freedom. As Janet shares in her book, she learned to modify her new life to meet her needs as well as the needs of both of her daughters. Today, she is a full-time flight attendant and licensed esthetician with her own line of natural skin care. She wrote this book to provide other parents with the hope, comfort, and practical tips she wished someone would have passed down to her all those years ago. Janet lives in Louisville, Kentucky next door to her first-born daughter Ann, grandson Tristin, and their ever-expanding family of dogs and cats.
