Overview

Portuguese is a very prominent language in at least four continents. A quarter of a billion native speakers of this language exist, and many expat communities further increase the reach and prominence of the language that once originated in a small country in Western Europe. Of course, Brazil has the largest number of native Portuguese speakers today, driven by its large size and population. In addition to Portugal itself, in Europe, there are also multiple countries in Africa where Portuguese is an official language (for example, Angola), and former colonies in Asia, like Goa (the current state of India). The language with a long history also has a fascinating vocabulary base and grammar rules. Even the intonation of speakers in every part of the world is unique; you always know when you are listening to a Portuguese speaker. Within this book, I have attempted to serve multiple audience members: those who are intermediate students of the language, as well as those who are more advanced, and are looking to fill every possible gap in their vocabulary as they make the transition to full professional fluency. Given that there is some divergence in both grammar and vocabulary rules on both sides of the Atlantic, I have tried to focus on words that are common between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese.
