The Ugly Parts of Me

Overview

Maddie Klein has been on her own far before she was legally emancipated at seventeen. Now eighteen, all Maddie cares about is keeping her head down and landing herself a scholarship that will grant her the freedom to get far away from Ridge Valley. She just has to survive the challenges of both her circumstances and the dark places of her mind long enough to make it happen. Despite the hurdles in her path, Maddie is determined to make it work. She has no other choice. Luckily, she is an old pro at navigating the obstacles thrown in her path. The one thing she doesn't know how to handle; the sexy, distracting, new English teacher who can't seem to understand that Maddie is not a person worth knowing. Harrison James has plenty of his own baggage that has left no room in his life for love or relationships. His job is the only love in his life and that's been enough for him. When a walking, talking reminder of his darkest time in life comes barreling through his classroom door, everything he thought he knew gets called into question.

Reviews

""The Ugly Parts of Me is a sensitively-written, slow burn romance between two damaged individuals who find love and trust in one another. Maddie, the heroine, is very affected by her past. Emancipated in her late teens, she works full-time to support herself through high school and is older than her years. Harrison James is also still dealing with a horrific crime and tragedy in his own past, committed by a family member. He and Maddie are thrown together in English class and feelings gradually develop. Both these characters believe they're broken, but discover they have the chance to heal one another. This book does contain dark themes although there is a happy ending. Intimate scenes are well-written and well-paced, reflecting the relationship development between the characters. It's interesting to read a student-teacher romance these days because any kind of age gap relationship has become so taboo. But in this novel, any ""forbidden"" aspect to their relationship is eclipsed by the darker issues overshadowing these characters' lives. So while this is technically a ""forbidden romance"", it doesn't feel taboo. The vibe is more haunting and ultimately hopeful. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily."" Noel Cades ""OMG! This book kept me hooked! I just couldn't stop turning the pages. So the story is about a teacher/student relationship ( Maddie and Harrison). And I would say their connection is... absolutely complicated! TROPE: AGE GAP Teacher/Student - Forbidden Love - Found Family - Slow Burn (making the readers like me absolutely crave FMC and MMC next interaction) - Open Door - Mental Health/PTSD Rep My Reading Experience: Maddie and ""Teacher"" Harrison - The connection between them is soooo magnetic! It's a FORBIDDEN kind of spark that just makes you think how in the world are they going to make this work? You can feel the tension practically jumping off the page! But it's not just about that tension. This book also has a really lovely way of showing how people find their place, their ""tribe."" I mean, it beautifully explores the idea of finding YOUR people. Both Maddie and Harrison carry their own heavy loads. Watching them deal with their own tough stuff and then seeing them find this unexpected sense of belonging with each other? Truly heartwarming!
