The Twelve Tribes

Overview

The twelve sons of the patriarch Jacob became heads of the tribes of Israel. In common with many biblical names, the names given to Jacob's sons highlight aspects of their personal characters and their subsequent histories. Andrew Bonar traces the biblical accounts of the twelve men and the tribes they founded. As he skilfully guides us through clues from the Old Testament narratives, Andrew Bonar shows us how each tribe continued to bear the characteristics of its founder, sometimes extending even into New Testament times.

Author Information

Andrew Bonar (1810-1892) was a famous Scottish minister who first served a congregation in the Perthshire village of Collace and then a city charge in Glasgow. He accompanied Robert Murray McCheyne on a journey to Palestine in 1839, and together they published an account of their momentous trip. Andrew Bonar was also an accomplished Hebrew scholar and had a lifelong interest in outreach to the Jews. This book brings together for the first time his articles about the twelve tribes of Israel, which were originally published in a magazine for converted Jews.
