OverviewThe Turkish Brigade played a pivotal role in the fighting during the Korean War, yet its exploits are virtually unknown to the English-speaking world. Likewise, in Turkey itself, its veterans have been denied collective remembrance and thanks from the State, with low pensions, no Turkish-sponsored monument and no campaign medal. This book, the first in an ongoing series, represents the efforts of retired Colonel Ali Denizli's efforts to collect the accounts of these Turkish heroes, recording their history for future generations. At the same time, the aim of this book is to contribute to Turkish military history in the form of written documentation. This is a great task, involving all the nations that served in Korea. It also seeks to shed light on the subject by examining those factors which affected the war, such as geography, geopolitics and culture. At the same time, this book is military history and, as such, includes detailed information, maps, photographs and sketches. In retirement, Colonel Denizli has attempted to obtain all possible documentation, and to record the memoirs of the Turkish troops involved in the Korean War. The US Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to the Turkish Brigade, for the first time, after its extraordinary victory at Kumyangjong-ni. After helping to save the city of Seoul, by its defensive battle at Taegyevon-ni, the Turks then made a major contribution towards securing the Armistice at the Battle of the Nevada Complex (Vegas, Elco Carson, East and West Berlin command posts), for which they received the Presidential Unit Citation for a second time. Thrown into action after their arrival in the theater of war, serving on the right flank of the United Nations' forces, the Turkish Brigade approached the enemy alone, amidst chaotic conditions. In late 1950, they fought a four-day battle at Chongcho (The Battle of Kunu-ri), encountering unimaginable wintry conditions. Such severe conditions, as well as a lack of knowledge of the Korean language, caused problems in separating friendly forces from the enemy, whose guerrillas caused many casualties. In spite of those conditions, the Turks took up defensive positions and struggled fiercely with the enemy. By blocking their advance three days were gained, and thus the American 8th Army was saved from envelopment and destruction. This book presents a detailed account of the Turkish troops' actions at Kunu-ri, and includes maps and many rare photographs.
