Overview

The title 'Tun' is the highest that can be conferred in the Malaysian system of Federal honours and awards. Two major awards confer the title: the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN), 'Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Defender of the Realm' and the Seri Setia Mahkota (SSM), 'Grand Commander of the Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia'.Both awards are extremely exclusive, each being limited to only 25 living recipients at any one time, excluding honorary awards to non-Malaysians, which are themselves also very rare. In total, only 85 Malaysian Tuns have been created since the awards were instituted in 1958 and 1966 respectively.
