Overview

After doing what he thought was right, both as a lawyer and as the trustee of a large family trust, Scott Freeman finds himself being sued by an unhappy and vindictive trust beneficiary. He turns to his long-time friend and fellow lawyer, Jack McConnell, to defend him in this lawsuit and against an ethical grievance filed with the Colorado Supreme Court by this same trust beneficiary. Jack must also deal with a false-facts social media defamation of Scott's son, accusing him of sexual misconduct as a high school teacher and girls' volleyball coach. And, Jack discovers information about a criminal syndicate the trouble-making trust beneficiary is involved in that is selling prescription pain medicines on the street to people addicted to these drugs but who can no longer obtain them legally. Jack is assisted in his activities by Veronica Stailey, a computer expert with the Federal Reserve Board who is also Jack's significant other, and by a private investigator known in the trade only as Ed, whose training and experience is not a permitted subject of inquiry. During all of this, after losing his old dog, Fletcher, Jack finds himself with a new dog, Elsie, who was orphaned when her people were killed in a car accident. Elsie provides Jack with unconditional love and understanding when times get tough in connection with his efforts to help Scott, and the suicide of a dear friend.
