He combines French, Mediterranean, and American styles into his cooking and he is best known for his eponymous restaurant in Los Angeles, California and for other restaurants in Huston, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Sacramento. Mellory was born in Sacramento, California on June 10, 1975 to Mary Tillcot and Luigi Mellory (His father is of Italian descent), who founded Old American Bar in 1974. Steven started cooking at his father's bar at age 16: by the time he graduated high school, he had been exposed to every position in Old American Bar, and he completed his culinary education in 2001 at the Hyde Park, New York campus of the Culinary Institute of America. In 2003, he married Jenny Fletcher and together they have two sons: Mike (15) and Louis (11). In 2018, Mellory and his wife founded the S-J Foundation (sponsored by Battino Corporation), funding various children's educational programs and pediatric disease research.
