Overview

When a third atlas - bound in earthy ochre - appears on Asha's grandmother's shelf, Asha, Kian, and Ixchel descend into the Phoneme Caverns, where every chamber resonates with a different vowel and the walls themselves carry the consonants of the world. Their host is the Cave Singer, who has been listening to the sounds of language her entire life. The Silence has begun an attack that words and grammar alone cannot repel: it is unmaking the sounds beneath the words. With the help of a phonologist named Alistair, the children must find the fifth voice of restoration - the voice of articulation itself - before the very mouths of speakers fall silent.
