"Judge, 28th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards Gene Hewett's words shine on the page. He is clearly an intelligent individual with countless stories to tell and a creative and emotive way of telling them. Throughout the book, Hewett integrates poetry, news reports, college schedules and bulleted summaries. The variety adds depth, especially in the chapter about the 1965 riots. The narrator shares information about the Watts Riots from the viewpoint of an intelligent, engaged observer at home with his mother. The news reports set the stage while the poetry lends emotional and insightful weight to the historical event. This was my favorite part of the book and seemed especially poignant in light of current events. I think the author could expand on many of the ideas touched upon in this chapter and create some really important context for people today. Anonymous Author Gene Hewett is obviously a talented writer, and his story of determination and perseverance will inspire others who want to live similarly fulfilling lives.
