I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern ship building has gone beyond that. (Captain Smith, Captain of Titanic)


Author Information

Beau Riffenburgh is an author and historian. He was editor of Polar Record, the head of the Polar History Group at the Scott Polar Research Institute and a lecturer at the University of Cambridge. He has written several books on exploration including The Myth of the Explorer and Shackleton's Forgotten Expedition. For Andre Deutsch he wrote the Royal Geographical Society Exploration Experience (2007) and Polar Exploration (2009).
