The Tire Swing: A Memoir About Survival

Overview

Nancy felt like she was in a dream for a moment----a nightmare. She couldn't explain what snapped inside her, but she methodically grabbed tubing, IV solution, alcohol and needles from the cart. She wasn't frightened, her heart continued to pound, but now it was with excitement. As she approached one of the burned and disfigured young men on a stretcher, his eyes held a look of panic she would never forget. She laid her hand on his chest and said, ""I'm Nancy, a nurse, and I am going to take care of you. I have to start an IV in your arm or ankle so I can give you some medicine to make you more comfortable. I won't leave you alone."" He blinked his one eye that was not burned and tried to say something. She bent down near his face. The smell of burned skin and flesh was overpowering, but didn't bother her now. She focused on his face. ""Don't let me die......."" He whispered, his throat so badly burned from the fire, the words were barely distinguishable. ""I promise,"" she said with all the confidence she could muster. ""I promise. What is your name?""

Author Information

As a child Nancy Jasin Ensley always felt confident when she was surrounded by the old tire swing in her grandmother's yard. It was a refuge from a turbulent childhood marked by a stormy relationship with her father. It was a place to soar and twist and turn and, for a moment, forget life's challenges. In this memoir, she narrates the highs and lows and twists and turns of her long and fruitful life. The Tire Swing chronicles Ensley's metamorphosis from a frightened and insecure child to an exciting career in the healthcare field, becoming a mother and grandmother, a wife, sister, and a trusted friend along the way. She tells of her experiences of abuse, failed relationships, addiction, loss, suicide, compulsion, and near-death experience--and how that path ended with recovery and success. This memoir not only provides an introspective look at Ensley's life, its trials, and its rewards; it also shows how the experiences and the relationships formed throughout impacted her journey.Nancy Jasin Ensley has worked in the healthcare field as a nurse, consultant, compliance officer, hospice specialist, legal nurse consultant, coding specialist, teacher and supervisor. Her poems appear in the National Library of Poetry. Ensley and her husband, John, have five children and fourteen grandchildren. They live in rural Michigan.
