OverviewThe life cycle is death and rebirth. Life is simply the transition...On the way to enlightenment and freedom from the physical body, a Tibetan Lama called Padmasambhava dictated to his wife the text Bardo Thodol (learning through repeated hearing), in Tibetan known as The Book of the Dead . These writings were interred in a 'terma' ('the hidden treasure of knowledge'), upon which a temple and monastery were built. Generations later, his disciples found the terma and began to study from it out loud, knowing that this would bring them enlightenment. The book is not a guide to death, it is a guide to life - how to live, how to move through the transitional stage, and how to go beyond death and how to return through reincarnation to life. The existing translations to date are very difficult for the contemporary reader, as they were translated for academic purposes. This new translation is based on the scientific Tibetan edition known as the Kalsang edition, while using other English translations.
