The word creed comes from the Latin credo, meaning I believe. A creed is an authoritative statement of basic articles of faith which the Christian church affirms. In Article 9 of the Belgic Confession, three short documents dating from the early history of the Christian church are named as creeds: the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed. The adoption of the Belgic Confession by the sixteenth and seventeenth-century synods of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands implied approval of these creeds.
