The Thief of Florence

Overview

Eva Anderson lives in Lulea, in the north of Sweden, where she is a teacher in her first position. She lives with Matteo Conti, an Italian whom she quickly fell in love with while he was salmon fishing in the rivers of the Nordbotten region. He decides to settle in Sweden and work at a hotel in Lulea. Their little daughter Lotta is two years old and takes part with her parents in the school celebration for the arrival of summer. At the end of the day, Matteo takes the tired Lotta home and takes the opportunity to disappear with his daughter. When Eva arrives home a little later, she guesses what is happening and calls the police to report the kidnapping. Inspector Gunnar Larson quickly intervenes with his secretary Karina. After a brief interrogation of this frantic and anxious mother, he realizes that the situation is urgent and that Eva seems to be telling the truth. For months, he will try to trace Lotta and her father, but also Sandra Nilsen, his mistress, with whom he planned to live in Italy. In Italy, in Florence, at Santa Novella station, a young Asperger autistic man works as part of an integration contract set up by psychiatrist Doctor Mancini. With the help of his team and educator Isabelle Regiano, the project aims to support young Alberto, who does his best to integrate well. Affected by autism and overwhelmed by restricted fields of interest, Alberto must obey Mr. Antonetti, the head of lost and found at the station. This unusual duo spends their days at the station, between Alberto's obsessions, the search for suitcases abandoned by travelers, and Mr. Antonetti's mistress, the beautiful Eleonore Rossi, a magazine seller at the kiosk on the central platform. Eva, desperate over the kidnapping of her little Lotta, has just moved to Botsmark, her native village, to take up a teaching position. These two characters will experience powerful and destabilizing emotions. Between northern Sweden and Italy, fate plays with all these human feelings.
