Overview

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Theory of the Leisure Class by Thorstein Veblen.Thorstein Bunde Veblen, (Cato, Wisconsin, July 30, 1857 - Palo Alto, San Francisco, California, August 3, 1929) was an American sociologist and economist. He was founder, along with John R. Commons, of the American institutionalist school and, more generally, of the institutionalist current in the social sciences. His fame is due to books such as The Theory of the Leisure Class and The Theory of the Economic Company, in which he passionately criticizes the evolution of the society and economy of his country.Veblen was born in Cato, Wisconsin, the son of Norwegian immigrants. He spent most of his youth on his family's farm in Nerstrand, Minnesota; currently a United States National Historic Landmark.Despite the fact that Norwegian was the language used at home, he learned English with his neighbors and at school, which he entered when he was 5 years old. His family was successful, and much emphasis was placed on education and hard work, which would contribute to his disdain for what he would later call blatant consumption. Veblen would leave the family nucleus in 1874 to pursue higher education at Carleton College Academy
