The Tenderloin Shaft: Philip Beckett's Last Case

Overview

Philip Beckett, 70, a former P.I. in San Francisco, returns to his City after living some years in Asia, mainly in a Thailand monastery. Ten years ago, his wife, Maggie Chang, was murdered. Beckett gave their house to struggling immigrant artist Vu Nguyen, now 50, and her daughter Anh, now Ann Wong, a stage actress married to Lisa Reyes, a marketer with an A.I. startup. . With his terminal cancer diagnosis, while trying to get off opiates for the pain, Beckett desires to see Ann and Lisa's daughter, Brenda Nguyen, while spending his last year in meditation and peace and finishing his self-help book. Instantly, he becomes involved with Vu and then entangled in the hurting City's underbelly of shady techies, drug gangs, politicians, and religious leaders. After billionaire drug boss Charlie Ming's daughter is kidnapped, and Ming and his wife Rose are told they must take fentanyl off the streets, Beckett and his old partner, ex-cop Bill Scudder, 60, each with a sense of purpose awakened, with both retirees still harboring strong investigative instincts, quickly deal out violence, combing the mean, sad streets of the Tenderloin and Chinatown to find three-year-old Pearl Ming. At the same time, Beckett continues to struggle with his cancer pain, religious doubt, ethical dilemmas, guilt, and inner turmoil while seeking redemption.
