The Technicolor Community

Overview

Carl Johnson has been pastor of Gracepoint Gospel Fellowship in New City, New York for over thirty-three years. He has seen the church grow from an attendance of about 140 in 1977 to an average of 1200 to 1400 weekly. During this time the congregation has changed dramatically moving from a completely white church to one that now boasts over 70 different ethnicities with almost equal numbers of whites, blacks and Hispanics and a smaller percentage of Asians. Carl holds a Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts and a Doctor of Ministry degree from The Kings Seminary in Van Nuys, California. Carl and his wife Sherry, who holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Fordham University, have often traveled together to various mission fields to teach in Bible school settings, in seminars, and pastor's conferences. They are parents of three children and grandparents of five.Realizing the dream of Multicultural Congregations - A Taste of HeavenA George Barna Survey in 1990 labeled just 3% of churches in America as Multicultural. The vast majority of congregations in America today remain largely segregated. Gracepoint Gospel Fellowship, a church of over a thousand attenders in suburban New York, has gone through a transformation in the past thirty years from a lily white congregation to one that now boasts over 70 ethnicities. Dr. Carl Johnson writes of his experience pastoring a congregation through this quiet revolution. He gives a solid Biblical-Theological Basis for the goal and the mandate of diversity in the local church. Questions addressed are: Can multicultural churches flourish? Should multicultural churches be encouraged? What are the benefits of multicultural churches? How intentional must the church be to achieve cultural diversity? How do we prepare a local church for diversity? And finally, Is it really necessary to strive for this goal? The book contains the results of qualitative research conducted within his congregation with the goal of identifying vital factors that have contributed to diversity. The answers come, not from pastors and church leaders, but from the responses of congregants who made the move from ethnic churches to a majority or multicultural congregation. Their feedback offers important insights.
