OverviewAfghanistan was, in fact, the first country where this kind of forces came to power in the person of the Taliban Islamic movement. This happened in the mid-1990s as a result of the victory of the Taliban over ideologically close groups of mujahideen who fought for power among themselves after the defeat of the left-democratic regime in 1992. In 2001, the Taliban ceded control of the country and moved the centers of their movement to neighboring Pakistan. Under the influence of these events, Taliban organizations also emerged in Pakistan, so that the flames of the Islamist revolution, which was extinguished in one country, spread to another. Militant Islamism in Afghanistan and Pakistan cannot be viewed in isolation from similar phenomena in other countries and regions of the Arab-Muslim world. In this respect, transnational Islamist groups have and continue to exert a great influence on the Afghan-Pakistani situation.
