Still, Hoy and Taylor got their teams to incorporate elements of sign language and finger-spelling for in-game signals that took opponents years to decipher. Despite the incomplete canvass about the lives of Hoy and Taylor, interest about these two remarkable players has exploded in the last several decades. Gallaudet University named its baseball field for Hoy, and he is the subject of two recent films, a documentary, at least three children's books, and a movement to induct him into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Jim Reisler is the author of twelve books and anthologies, most of which are about baseball and other sports. Reisler has written for Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, and the New YorkTimes and appeared on the landmark documentary History of the Yankees: Moments and Mystique from the YES Network. He has also been interviewed extensively on television and radio and his books have been favorably reviewed in publications ranging from Sports Illustrated to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post. As the father of a deaf daughter, Reisler has volunteered for several organizations that benefit deaf children. A native of Pittsburgh, Reisler is a graduate of Kenyon College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He lives in Hartsdale, New York.
