Reviews

When the author and I met, I had recently retired as Director of the Sarasota County Library System and was eager to support local writers however I could. Paul was staffing his booth at the Fair, chatting and selling Second Fiddles. Of course, I bought a copy. I have been a fan ever since. As a librarian who likes to categorize things, I submit that ""stories"" isn't the most precise word to describe these writings. Because they include anecdotes, reminiscences, descriptive vignettes, romances, mysteries, commentaries, dialogues, plays, and skits, it seems as though there should be a more nuanced word to them. Still, I admit they are all well within the broad tradition of stories. The characters are kids and old geezers; farmers, and doctors; Native Americans and Polish immigrants. The settings range from mountain retreat to vintage carriage house. You will read about dreams, secrets and funny games. There is a delightful variety in these tales that Paul spins to entertain us. One of my favorites, ""The Green Box,"" is about a surprise from beyond the grave. Another describes an intriguing hiding place discovered during a game of ""Hide and Seek"". I love the humor but also the pathos. Plus, I found much here to encourage my own reflections. So pull up a comfortable chair, put up your feet, and give yourself over to the old-fashioned pleasure of Paul Cline's imagination. Nancy Pike L.D.
