OverviewThe study of ""Focus and Topic"" is a main concern of recent linguistic research focusing on the structural configuration of the extrasentential hierarchy and on the relation between syntax and discourse-related categories. This work provides a minimalist account of ""Focus and Topic"" constructions on the basis of a syntax-phonology interface analysis. On the assumption that structural investigation must proceed from ""bare output conditions"", the author starts her analysis from the prosodic phrasing of Focus and Topic constructions proceeding to the type and extent of derivations which produced the relevant PF structures. The originality of the present work rests on its syntax-phonology interface perspective, which is systematically applied to both Focus and Topic analysis. This allows innovative insights into the grammatical properties of Focus and Topic constituents and how syntactic information is made visible to interface interpretation. Though centered on Italian, cross-linguistic analysis is extensively provided. Full Product DetailsAuthor: M. FrascarelliPublisher: Springer Imprint: Springer Edition: 2000 ed. Moreover, it constitutes a significant addition to the study of Italian syntax and phonology.
