Overview

The purpose of this volume is to take a long view of problems relating to our conceptions of God arid man which will have to be handled after the passing of what the author thinks is an impending crisis in religious thought. It is a plea for an independence which will enable individuals to work out their career for the general welfare. It aims to suggest the attitude to be assumed (sympathetic but unprejudiced) and the methods to be applied (inductive, psychological) historical) in the study of religion-as embodied in belief and behavior. Its twelve chapters deal with The Comparative Study of Religions; Some Aspects of the Evolution of Thought; Specialism and Individualism-General Features, and Application; Survivals and their Significance -General Remarks, and Examples; Environment and Change-History, and Some Aspects of the Development of Civilization and Religion; Development and Continuity (two chapters); Failure and Success; and Conclusion. It is to be remarked that the author is not making a direct contribution to the science of comparative religion; his purpose is to show the pitfalls along the road and the way to escape them to those who would do so. While his leanings are decidedly conservative, the evolutionary view of religion is fundamental to his treatment. Considerable space is given to the data furnished by Biblical sources and to their suggestiveness as guides in study. The result is a meaty book, which does not tempt, however, to rapid perusal. Indeed, the volume is a veritable mental gymnastic, with rewards reserved for the persevering reader. It will interest mainly the teacher and student of the philosophy of religion, the methodologist, and the lecturer on the history of religion. -Homiletic Review, Volume 69
