OverviewThe site of Chersonesos sits at the southwesterly end of the Crimean peninsula. This site is a massive challenge to conservators, with large areas exposed to the elements and uncontrolled development in the vicinity. In 2003, the conservation team from the University of Texas began a concerted effort to assess the state of the entire site and to plan an appropriate conservation programme. Detailed reports of their tests, the materials looked at, and records of the conservation process are made - supported by helpful photographs. The second site recorded in this volume, Metaponto, is located on the south coast of Italy, in the Gulf of Taranto. For 6 weeks in September/October 2003, a team from Texas conducted a field survey, exploring almost 3km square of the site that was previously unrecorded. These two sites are admirably presented by the people of the Institute of Classical Archaeology at Texas, bringing their work on them to a wider audience.
