Rocky Valentine, a ruggedly handsome young man, finds himself fishing in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's the unintended target of an ill-conceived cellular transformation beam, accidentally released from the laboratory of a dying planet in a distant galaxy. This powerful beam of blue light both alters his DNA and cells. The transformation triggers profound changes to both his mind and body. Rocky, surviving the transformation process, realizes that something otherworldly and extraordinary has happened to him. He opts to keep his bizarre abilities hidden from others as long as he can by maintaining a degree of physical normalcy while he navigates the challenges of high school and later college. While attending the University of Michigan, the alien granddaughter of the scientist responsible for the creation of the beam arrives on Earth. She is accompanied by a rogue cyborg, and their mission is to eliminate Rocky, who is perceived to be a threat to humanity due to his transformation. Her plans, however, take an unexpected turn when she becomes infected by orbiting nanorobots surrounding the planet. Landing on Earth near Rocky, she quickly sickens, and in an act of selflessness, Rocky intervenes to save her. This leads to an unlikely friendship as they confront the imminent danger posed by her malevolent cyborg intent on destroying him.
