The Spindle

Overview

he #1 BESTSELLER described as: ""If 'George MacDonald wrote American Gods"". - OnStage The Spindle is the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty retold from the dark fairy's point of view... Set in the Celtic world of the fifth century, The Twelve Faeries are elemental spirits charged with caring for the earth and all its inhabitants. But the world is changing, and as humans forget them, the Faeries, and the important things they represent, are disappearing. Once numerous, now The Twelve faeries are all that remain, and they are keenly aware that they are facing extinction. Sweet, sycophantic Violet, faerie of beauty, love and dreams has made herself into a darling of the King's court in a desperate bid for survival. Her sister Nor, the faerie of death, who desires above all things to be truly good and loved, is feared by all the human realm and completely shunned. But when Violet breaks the faerie law and gives the barren Queen a child, the future of human history is dismantled. Nor and the other faeries must right her wrong and restore Princess Rose to her correct place in time before it's too late. Their plan is threatened by a prideful King desperate to maintain his power, the kind, poor gardener Arthur whose destiny is endangered by his deep love for the Princess he was never supposed to meet, and Princess Rose herself - an intelligent, passionate young woman fated to become one of the greatest rulers the land has ever known.

Reviews

""Phenomenal...Griffin (is comparable) to C.S. Lewis and George MacDonald."" - The Argonaut ""A strong story that is held by a powerful and unique style with just enough detail to help readers feel immersed in this world of magic and survival...the story...masterfully...keep(s) audiences fully engaged and hoping for more. The Spindle is sure to please fans of fairy tale retellings, full of novel concepts and perspectives that transform the classic tale into a wholly new experience. Don't miss out on discovering this new take on a classic story that turns it upside down and makes it more complex and fantastic."" - BetterAuds ""This is one story you should not sleep on."" - The Tellest ""Her thoughtful approach to world building really sets this debut novel apart...5 Stars. This is a book that I can see myself rereading...Something that (Ms. Griffin) does with this that a lot of authors don't know how to do, and it attests that it is because Ms. Griffin is a playwright...is that...there is so much incredible scene work between characters where we really get in and get deep...it delivers...there's not a misuse or misstep even of the smallest characters...You feel fulfilled at the end. I absolutely want more stories in this universe."" - Saturday Morning Confidential ""Thank goodness the fairies have gifted us Ashley Griffin....Please get this book, and get it as a gift for everyone you know...This is a fairy tale for folks who don't like fairy tales...Griffin...has done something with...The Spindle, that can't quite be described. She has written a book that seems to defy category - unless it is to say that she has returned to the kind of storytelling defined by George MacDonald and Madeline L'Engle that itself defied description...Griffin has made a name for herself as a writer who delves into deeply human, mythic themes, and she is second to none when it comes to magical realism, world-building, and characters who seem to exist independently of their creator - one gets the feeling that Griffin is more likely to play host to real-life fairies insisting she transcribe their stories than that she is a creator inventing of her own volition...This is not the generic retelling of a well-known story we have grown desperately weary of...The book is at once utterly satisfying and yet never goes where you expect it to...The Spindle utterly subverts all expectations of a ""YA Fantasy"" book...In the same way that A Wrinkle in Time became a children's/YA book because, as L'Engle said, ""You have to write the book that wants to be written...if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children,"" that is the way in which The Spindle is YA Fantasy."" - OnStage
