OverviewSouth Africa's youth unemployment rate has, for more than a decade, been among the highest in the world. At the time of writing, more than sixty percent of South Africans between the ages of fifteen and twenty-four are without work - a statistic so large and so sustained that it has passed, in public discourse, from crisis into atmosphere. It is no longer news. It is the weather. This novel is not a report on that statistic. It is an attempt to stand inside it - to inhabit, at the level of a single life, what it costs to be young and capable and educated in a country that has asked its young people to invest in themselves and then declined, systematically and with considerable administrative creativity, to honour the terms of the agreement. The novel is dedicated, in its final pages, to every young South African who did everything right and was still made to feel it was not enough. This note is addressed to the same people, and to those who made them feel that way, and to anyone who has mistaken the absence of a credential for the absence of a person. The distinction matters. Sipho Dlamini will insist on it.
