OverviewThroughout your life, you will have been told a number of facts, presented with a version of history, possibly indoctrinated into a political system, and perhaps inculcated into a particular religion. Generally, this will have been done by someone you respect, usually a parent, teacher, esteemed adult, scientist or priest. Also generally, the individual concerned will be motivated by a genuine belief in the information being given and a wish to help you and improve your lot. However, there are those who misinform you deliberately either through mischieviousness or malice or self-interest. Usually, you will detect such chicanery either at the time or as a result of experience in later life. The really dangerous expositor is the one who genuinely believes in the material being peddled to you, as he or she is blind to any argument, brooks no doubt, and is committed to your conversion. Unfortunately, many people accept what they have been told and become disciples themselves, maintaining a closed mind on the subject for the rest of their lives. Thus, vast edifices of falsehood are created and subsequently exhibit the momentum of a juggernaut against any attempt to change their basic tenets. None of this really matters to most individuals, who are content to continue in a serene state of certitude for most of their lives. Not so with the individuals who have a vested interest in the status quo. Such individuals are prepared to go to great lengths to stifle any new concept which might affect their cosy way of life, and no doubt you can think of many instances where new ideas have met with fierce resistance. Examples ranging from Copernicus denying an Earth-centred universe right up through Frank Whittle trying to build his jet engine in a world dominated by propeller driven aircraft. So, what this book is about is keeping an open mind. Do not blindly accept the wisdom handed down by others, however kindly meant, without thinking about it yourself. I am not asking you to question every mortal thing, only to consider there always may be more than one explanation for anything under the Sun. This book is written very tongue-in-cheek as an alternative way of looking at our universe rather than accepting the great tabernacle provided for our delight by the scientific establishment.
