Deep winter, 1935. David Haph has fallen from a ledge in the mountains of western Massachusetts, shattering his lower leg. James A. Naughton grew up in North Adams, Massachusetts, surrounded by the Berkshire Mountains and the forests that still exist there. In his youth, he was a hiker and backpacker. Yet he did not fully appreciate, until he left North Adams, just how indelible a stamp the Berkshires and the wilderness of western Massachusetts had left on his life. He received a graduate degree from Northeastern University and a post graduate degree from the University of Connecticut. Retired now, he worked more than 30 years as a writer in the life insurance and investment management industries in Boston.
