Overview

During World War II, Harold V. White, better known as ""Whitey,"" completed thirty-five missions as co-pilot of a B-17 bomber in the European Theatre fighting for the Allied forces. His squadron, part of the 390th Bomb Group, was stationed in Framlingham, England, flying missions over France and Germany and participating in shuttle missions with the Soviets in Ukraine. He returned stateside without a scratch and never lost his love of flying. In his own small plane, he enjoyed flying fair-weather sightseeing trips with his wife throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He lived to be 97, and even in his final years, if pressed by his daughter, Whitey could recount in vivid detail all the flak, all the close calls, and all the extreme challenges of his war experience.
