The Silent Intruder: A personal journey of living with cancer

Overview

At eighty-four, after a full and joyful life hard-won from the shadows of a childhood polio diagnosis, the last thing Jan expected was to face another life-altering battle. But cancer, the silent intruder, doesn't ask for permission. The author of The Hidden Scars of Polio returns with a raw, honest account of her second brush with a terrifying diagnosis - this time, bladder cancer. Written with vulnerability, strength and grace, The Silent Intruder is not just a story of illness; it's a testament to resilience. This book illuminates the emotional complexity of navigating a life touched by illness more than once. With unwavering courage and a quiet determination to keep living, the author invites readers into the depths of her thoughts, fears and hard-won hope. This is a story for anyone who has ever whispered, ""Why me?"" For anyone touched by cancer. For anyone seeking strength in the face of the unknown.

Author Information

Jan Wills-Collins is an eighty-four-year-old retired nurse and health and safety consultant, spending her retirement years in the beautiful coastal town of Whangamatā, New Zealand. In 2021, she published her memoir, The Hidden Scars of Polio. Her journey with polio and its aftermath has found resonance with many people. One would be forgiven for thinking Jan paid her dues with this illness, but this was not to be. In December 2022, Jan was diagnosed with bladder cancer. This book is written for no other reason than to help others deal with the same situation (and possibly some self-counselling).
