The Silence of the Barfüsserplatz: A city loses its memory

Overview

The case: Commissioner Hutterli, an experienced investigator with the Basel police, stumbles upon a series of mysterious disappearances among the marginalized. His investigations lead him deep into the entanglements of the Basel chemical industry and the powerful ""Guild of Oblivion."" The discovery: Together with the young whistleblower Elena Weber, he uncovers ""Project Lethe ."" In a secret high-tech laboratory deep beneath Basel Minster, the unscrupulous Dr. Arbenz is experimenting with a gas that can selectively erase human memory and conscience. The goal is a conflict-free, perfectly controllable society-a city without guilt. The showdown: During the Basel Carnival, when the entire city disappears behind masks (Larven), the finale takes place. Hutterli infiltrates the underground laboratory. He manages to stop the project, but the price is high: Elena is exposed to the gas and loses all her memories, including her identity and her relationship with Hutterli. The bitter end: The city's powerful figures cover up the scandal. The laboratory is officially declared a ""structural defect,"" and Hutterli is silenced with a pension. He resigns and dedicates his life to caring for the amnesiac Elena. He becomes the lone guardian of a truth that Basel has long since forgotten.
