THE WISHING SHELF BOOK AWARDS 4th July 2020 TITLE: The Shape Story 2, The Delightful World of 3-D Shapes AUTHOR: Miss Anna Star Rating: 5 'A fun, exciting way for young children to learn about 3-D shapes.' The Wishing Shelf REVIEW The trick with educational books is trying to make them fun. If the text is dry, boring and/or uninspiring, the child will get bored. And, as every parent and teacher knows, a bored child won't learn anything. Well, I'm delighted that Miss Anna, the author of The Shape Story 2, understands this all too well. In this short, sweetly illustrated book, the author turns 'learning 3-D shapes' into a treasure hunt! Now I think that's a very cool idea. Basically, the author shows the child the shape and then the child must try to find the shape in a picture. For example, with the cone, the author shows a picture of a cone-shaped party hat (sort of fun); then the child must find the cone-shaped traffic cone amongst the bumper cars. The book looks at lots of different shapes including the sphere, cone, cylinder, and even different sorts of pyramids. What I liked most about this book was the extra thought that went into producing it. For example, the short text is written in rhyme; and, if there's a difficult word like 'cylinder', the author helps the child to pronounce it by writing: (pronounced as see-lin-der). All in all, this is a gem of a book, and I would recommend it to any parent/teacher of 6 - 9 year olds who wish to introduce shapes in a fun and interesting way.
