OverviewReview from Martin Galvin: What a poignant and true picture of small town America Bernie Jankowski has given us here. A memory he has given us of our town's spinster aunts, tough kids, worndown mothers and fathers. Pictures of Vi, the waitress dishing onions and harboring a love for the one man who keeps coming back. Pictures of Father Procopio hearing the long line of confessions of a Saturday afternoon, of Jack, one-eyed Jack who lost one eye playing darts as a boy in the dark and spends his time belting out old Hank Williams' tunes. There's nothing sentimental here, but surely and flawlessly there is the pleasure of deft portraits beautifully drawn of an America that loved and nurtured so many of us who have moved away and will not go back, even though we know or at least hope in our hearts the town will always take us back. What Mr. Jankowski needs now is a singer to turn these grand stories into the kind of haunting songs that will make him enough money that he can buy Shamokin. The poems deserve as much.
