OverviewRevelation is a fascinating letter in the New Testament. While Revelation looks ahead to the future when history is concluded, it also has a message for today. In chapters two and three are seven letters addressed to the seven churches. Christianity is in its infancy and has a long way to go before it is located on every continent around the globe. Before it is one hundred years old, it endures persecution. Each of the seven churches dealt with persecution and the pressure to assimilate into pagan culture. Sometimes the pressure to assimilate is said to be accommodation, adapting, or syncretism. Whatever term is chosen it boils down to the surrender of Christian beliefs and acceptance of pagan beliefs. Modern believers might think, ""That would never happen today. We don't have pagan temples today. Society is primarily Christian."" But syncretism still exists today, and Christians must be vigilant. Pagan beliefs do not become part of the church with the announcement of a megaphone. They creep into church quietly and often cloaked in a counterfeit love. Sometimes Christians ""go along to get along"" and accept popular assumptions without examination. Like the seven churches, modern Christians must read and study their Bibles. Examine trends and fads within the light of Scripture. So, the seven letters have much to say today.
