Reviews

There is no question that The Serpent and the Rose is the definite guide to the representation of the Virgin Mary's Immaculate Conception in late medieval Hispanic poetry as it is meticulously researched and well supported. Hispanists and medievalists must be indepted to Twomey for this superb rendering of the Virgin Mary and her Immaculate Conception . - Naomi M. J. Hoogesteger, Durham, in: Medium Aevum, Vol. 78, no. 1 (2009). pp. 152-153 There is in this study much to learn about the medieval mind and how it approaches and evaluates one of the central notions of its faith. Twomey has given us a highly useful book which will find a place in the libraries of Hispanists as well as non-Hispanists. - Joseph T. Snow, Michigan State University (Emeritus), in: Bulletin of Spanish Studies, 87/7 (2010), pp. 984-986 Lesley Twomey's book offers far more than its subtitle can contain. - Miri Rubin, Queen Mary, University of London, QMed Book of the Month
